The Homestead Spartans, hosts of this year’s sectionals, defeated the Northrop Bruins in the first round last night by a score of 66-31.

Northrop got things going with a field goal on their opening drive. Homestead would respond with a touchdown run by Jiya Wright. The Bruins pulled some trickery out of their playbook late in the first quarter with a double lateral bomb down field that put Northrop inside the five yard line. Unfortunately for them, the next play fullback Antwone Washington fumbled at the goal line and the Spartans took possession.

Northrop got the ball next in the second quarter, still trailing 3-7. After another successful drive to the goal line, Washington redeemed himself by punching it in for a score. The rest of the quarter was a back-and-forth scoring clinic. Homestead reached the end zone four more times before the half, including two from Jordan Presley. Garrett Schoenle threw for two scores for the Bruins, one of which with 35 seconds left until halftime. A last second Spartan field goal sent Homestead into the half with a 38-24 lead.

The second half was all Homestead. They would score four more touchdowns and put their reserves in for the fourth quarter. Northrop did put one more touchdown on the board, but it wouldn’t matter, as the Spartans took this first round match up 66-31.

Presley shined for the Spartans, as he rushed for three touchdowns. This win advanced Homestead to the next round in sectionals and ended Northrop’s season.
