The Northrop Bruins were given a scare from the visiting South Side Archers last night, but went home with a 35-20 victory.

South Side scored the only touchdown of the first quarter with a scramble from quarterback, Dennis Johnson. The Bruins would answer in the second quarter with two rushing touchdowns of their own from Casey Lawrence and Garrett Schoenle. After another Northrop touchdown and two more Archer scores, the match reached halftime with Northrop on top 21-20.

The Bruins’ defense held strong in the second half, not giving up a single point. Allan O’Grady and Nick Newbauer came into the game on defense early in the first half for injured starters and really gave Northrop a lift.

“We were down three defensive starters and we really relied on some people that haven’t gotten a lot of Friday night experience,” says Northrop head coach, Jason Doerffler. “They stepped up and got the job done.”

The Bruins would score twice more in the second half and eventually came away with a hard fought, 35-20 win. Garrett Schoenle ran for one touchdown and threw two to Davieun Berry. Casey Lawrence also rushed for two scores, including a 32-yarder.

“Our conference is so tough top to bottom that you’re happy to win regardless of how well you play,” said Doerffler.

Northrop’s next game is Friday, September 2 at Wayne.
