Joshi Leads the Speech Team to 6th Place!

The Speech and Debate Team finished sixth out of 19 at Elkhart Memorial High School on January 31.

Senior Urvi Josh led the team by finishing third in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking, and took fourth place in Impromptu Speaking as well.

In U.S. Extemp, contestants are given a topic and 30 minutes to prepare a seven-minute speech on U.S. current events. In Impromptu Speaking, contestants have 30 seconds to deliver a five-minute speech.

Junior Melissa Kizer grabbed fourth in Broadcasting. Students have to prepare a 1- or 2-minute commercial, a newscast and an editorial.

Srikiran Dasari, junior, brought home sixth place in International Extemporaneous Speaking and seventh in Impromptu Speaking. International Extemp contestants have 30 minutes to prepare a seven-minute speech on International events.

Sophomore Alix York placed eighth in Original Performance, which is a 5-10-minute speech created and delivered solely the by competitor.

Caleb Curtis received eighth in Dramatic Interpretation, during which contestants take a piece of literature and perform it.

Even though the speech team is small, their motto is “Our quality will beat your quantity.”
