The Fault In Our Stars Falls Into Theaters June 6

New York Times best selling author John Green takes readers on an emotional thrill ride in his book, The Fault In Our Stars. Filled with the highest highs and the lowest lows, this book challenges readers to connect with the characters on a deep level. Realistically, emotional thrill ride might be a bit of an understatement.

A tale of young love is woven with hysterical laughter and heart wrenching tears. Two teenagers fight unbelievable odds.  When I first read this book, I was speechless. The story of two cancer patients falling in love caught my attention immediately. This book receives my highest recommendations.

Hazel Grace Lancaster is a seventeen year old girl battling thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. With her breathing compromised, Hazel is forced to carry a portable oxygen tank with her at all times. Feeling like an ostracized teenager is hard enough, but Hazel faces her cancer and mortality every day. Hazel’s mother sends her to a cancer support group for teens to help her deal with her illness.

There, she meets Augustus Waters, a boy about her same age whose osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) has been in remission for over a year after his leg amputation.

Throughout the course of the book, Hazel and Augustus learn more about each other’s lives and ongoing struggles. “Gus” is the first person to break Hazel out of her shell.
“What’s your story?”
“I was diagnosed when I was 13…”
“No, no, no, your real story.”
“I am quite unextraordinary.”
“I reject that.”

It’s pretty safe to say that we know what is going to happen next. “As he read, I fell in love like you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”–Hazel

Hazel and Gus’ relationship blossoms, and their bond becomes unbreakable, even through health scares and trying times.

The movie comes out in theaters on June 6. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, who play Hazel and Gus, also starred in Divergent. If this movie is anything like the book, everyone is in for a real treat.
