Facebook Adds New Gender Options

The idea of Facebook expanding their gender options has swirled around Facebook for about a year now, but the idea really started to come to life about four months ago during an in-house brainstorming session.

With Facebook having 1.23 billion active monthly users, it is an easy place to share who you are and what you do with family and friends, but for most who do not identify themselves as either male or female, it can be hard to be open on many social networks.

“I feel like this is a big step for those people who would want to do this. It’s very important to be accepted for who they are,” said Courtney Carpenter, Junior.

While there are those who believe in two genders and two genders only, it may seem like a senseless thing to change, but really, this is a major step towards the acceptance of those who do not identify themselves as “male” or “female”.

To change your gender identity to a custom setting, visit your Facebook profile and select “update info” then “edit” at the “basic information” setting. Here is a screenshot of what this new change looks like.
