Caffeine, electronics affect sleeping

A while ago there was an article published about sleep and how important it is.  This is a follow-up on that story.  Sleep is essential to everyday life.  When you don’t get enough sleep you don’t function right.  You walk around the school like a zombie and the day goes in a blur, trust me it happens to all of us.  To prevent being a zombie during the school day, the answer is getting sleep.  It is much harder said than done.  Here are some more tips on how to get a good nights sleep.

  • Don’t have too much caffeine intake in the day.  Many students drink energy drinks like Monster and soda like Mountain Dew, which have much more caffeine than other sodas.  Caffeine and sleep don’t mix well.
  • Turn off electronics a half hour before you want to go to sleep.  Electronics are distracting and keeps your brain going.  When your brain is constantly running it is hard to fall asleep.
  • Don’t procrastinate.  When you procrastinate your homework or anything it is harder for your brain to shut down and it is harder to fall asleep.

“It is not healthy to be sleeping 1-2 hours a night because it doesn’t allow your brain to get into a deep sleep and go through all the processes it needs to,” sophomore Janae Gerdom said.

If you do these things it should help you fall asleep.
